WALLCOVERING faq
WHAT wallpaper caN i BUY THROUGH the ONLINE SHOP
Currently Make West Shop is only offering the purchase of wallpaper samples through our online shop. We custom make each wallpaper pattern and mural to fit your space. So if you’ve decided you’re ready to proceed with your project, drop us a line. One of our designers will work with you to set up the pattern or mural to your room’s specifications. We’ll send you a mock-up as well as a sample, if you haven’t already ordered one, and get your project into production!
samples: what to expect
Our standard wallcovering samples are 2’X2’ and include a small installation image. If you’d like to adjust scale, color, or alter any of the design, let us know beforehand and we’ll make the necessary changes prior to sending your sample. All of our samples are made to order and take 1-2 weeks to fulfill.
repeating patterns & murals
Make West Shop offers both wallpaper patterns and murals. A pattern repeats itself multiple times while a mural is usually one design, separated into panels and tiled across a wall. We’ve labeled each design in our Tiger Walls Collection as either a pattern or mural to help guide you in selecting the wallcovering that is right for you. If you’re curious how one of our designs will look in your space, let us know and our team can send you a mock-up.
match type
Match type refers to the way in which a pattern should be lined up for installation. There are three main types of matches; straight, drop, and random. A straight match means that the design elements repeat horizontally from panel to panel. A half drop or quarter drop match indicates that the design will repeat diagonally from panel to panel. A random match means that the panels may be installed without needing to line up any design elements.
OVERLAP VS. BUTT JOINT
Our patterns and murals are usually set up with 1” overlap to allow your installer a bit of wiggle room when matching up the pattern/design. The installer will layer the edges of the wallpaper over one another and then double cut the seam for a flawless finish. We use overlap when setting up designs on most of our Type II materials. The only exceptions are our Neenah and Anywhere Peel and Stick materials. These two substrates are commonly installed by the savvy DIY-er. We use what is called a butt joint for these materials. The design will extend to the edge of the material and you or your installer will line up the pattern edge to edge without needing to trim.
material choices
Make West Shop offers a wide variety of wallcovering materials. Our Type II commercial grade vinyl substrates are durable and great for use in high traffic areas. We also carry a number of specialty materials as well as consumer friendly peel and stick wallpaper. When it comes to choosing what will work best for your particular project, we can help guide you in the right direction. Contact us if you have questions.
measuring your space
Measure the width and height of each wall you’d like to apply the wallpaper. Multiply the total width and height to calculate the total square footage. Do not make any deductions for windows, doors, or other obstacles. If you need some assistance, try using our calculator tool which will also offer an estimate of the total cost. Once you are ready to place your order, contact us here. Make West will help you finalize your measurements and set-up the design of your choice to fit your space.
placing your order: what to expect
Once you receive and approve of your sample, contact us here and we’ll work together to get your project into final production. Lead times may vary depending on the quantity needed to complete your project. Standard lead times are 3-4 weeks. Unless you’ve purchased a peel & stick product, you will receive untrimmed goods rolled on a core. Untrimmed means that excess paper on the edges of the product will need to be trimmed off by hand. Your wallcovering will come with an installation guide along with panels that are labeled and numbered for ease of installation. Each project is printed to order which means that color and dye lot may change if you order the same pattern at a later time.

design & production timeline
Most minor design adjustments can be completed within a week. Although, the time it takes to make design changes may vary depending on the complexity of what you’d like to alter. Please keep in mind that wallcovering samples generally take 1-2 weeks from the day we receive the order. Final production usually takes an additional 3-4 weeks from the day we receive payment and approval. These lead times are subject to change. If you have a specific deadline you’re hoping to reach, please let us know and we will do everything we can to meet your goals.
wall preparation & install
Prior to installing any wallcovering, we highly recommend that your walls be at a level 5 finish. Any imperfections or textures on the wall may show through the material once it is installed. It is also imperative that you prime your walls with a water based primer such as Zinnser Shieldz or something equivalent. Primed walls should have at least 24 hours to dry and off gas before beginning installation.
Make West Shop suggests hiring a professional installer who is familiar with commercial grade wallcoverings.
